Latest News - 9th July 2007
The last 3 weeks has seen plenty of bowls taking place in what has provided a very busy schedule for all at Bath. Bath have continued there run in the National 2 rink competition after defeating Chew Stoke last week. They now progress to the area semi-final where they play Nailsea on Tuesday 10th July.
Commiserations go to the final Bath team left in the County Fours competition, after a good run from George Lee, Derrick Southcombe, Tony Shearing and Richard Doughty. They reached the quarter finals at Bristol BC but unfortunately lost to a strong Bridgewater team which inlcuded England U25 squad member Neil Kunc.
Kevin Rowden and Craig Doughty are still going in both the County Pairs and Triples competitions with Romney Cox. They participate in the quarter finals of the triples being held at Bridgewater BC and play Mike Martin's Yeovil team. They face Waylon Cox and Mike Pratt in the Pairs area final this Tuesday.
After the disappointment of going out in the first round of the Turnbull cup. The club is making the most of it by now reaching the final of the Wedmore Plate which will be held at our club in September against either Nailsea or Somerton. This was achieved after a convincing 50 shot win against Banwell BC at Burnham-on-Sea last Friday.
Finally 5 members of Bath BC were in action against Cornwall CBA in Somerset's final Middleton Cup match. With an outside chance of qualification Somerset needed a good result however Cornwall turned in a very good performance and ran out 20-2 winners on the day. Somerset's only points came from Bath's Terry Perkins' and Craig Doughty's rink. Other players in action were Kevin Rowden, Mike Parsons and Duncan McGovern. Somerset should not be to disappointed with this seasons campaign after running Devon close and 2 good wins over Dorset and Wiltshire.
Dorset CBA 113 v 139 Somerset CBA
Venue: Wessex Bowling Club (Dorset)
Once again Somerset CBA were in action in the Middleton Cup. After a superb victory over Wiltshire last Saturday, Somerset needed to pick up a win again to stand any chance of reaching the Finals
There were four Bath players in action, Terry Perkins again skipped with Craig Doughty at 3 and the Bristol BC players Ed Hopegood and Neil Yeoman, lead and 2. They were drawn to play on a very tricky rink 6 against well known Dorset skip Barry Patterson. After a slow start where they were 10-0 down they fought back well over the rest of the game, eventually taking a 1 shot lead into the last end. Unfortunately with the rink 2 down playing Terry’s last wood he was unable to find the target and went down by 3 shots.
It was a different story for the other 2 Bath BC players in action Mike Parsons was moved from playing on Don Fowkes’ rink, with James Branfield back available. Duncan McGovern was recalled after being unavailable for the previous game against Wiltshire. They made up the front end of Mark Denslow’s (Illminster) rink along with Mike Tritton of Yeovil at 3. A very solid start saw them take an 8-0 lead. They continued to pile on the pressure to the Dorset skip and produced a very consistent performance to stop the Dorset rink scoring any shots in the last 11 ends. They came out 29-6 winners.
Overall Dorset held Somerset for the first 15 ends, even with Mark Denslow’s rink winning comfortably. However 5 minutes of superb bowls from the Somerset team pulled them away, with Neil Williams’ rink picking up a 5, as did Don Fowkes’ rink. However it was the 7 picked up by Ryan Collier’s rink which did the damage and took Somerset clear (I wont mention his last wood, which he fired in the ditch!! I know Ryan…you were under orders from the MC manager to put in a back wood in…just not so far next time!). Somerset picked up 18 points to Dorset’s 4.
There were five Bath BC pairs in action in Section E. Alan Gilbert and Geoff Hall travelled to Weston Bath BC to face Graham Luker and Jamie Dellow. The game came to a tight conclusion with Alan and Geoff going down 22-21.
John Freeman and Keith Newman entertained Don Dart and Bryn Hawkins from Purnells BC and with some consistent bowling from the Bath pair they came away with a comfortable 24-10 victory.
Tony Beaverstock and Tony Shearing travelled to Norwest to play Hill and Woodham and came away with a good victory 22-13. They will now play another Bath BC pair of Derrick Southcombe and Richard Doughty after they defeated Tony and Chris Elley of Sydney Gardens 20-16.
The Final Bath BC pair in action was Romney Cox and Bill Alexander. Dave Yarlett and Bolton from Fosseway BC were the opponents and after a tough game Romney and Bill came through winners 20-17.

Section D in the Somerset County Pairs hosted four teams from Bath Bowling Club on Tuesday. John Hazard and Mike Rixson played Rogers and Langley (Bath PO) and ran out 28-17 winners. They now face J Feltham and McGrath of Weston Bath BC.
Bath pairs Hardwick, Esnouf, and Don Turner, Duncan McGovern fought out a tough game, with both teams playing well. The final score finished 27-21 in favour of Don Turner and Duncan McGovern.
The last pair in Section D in action were 2005 County Pairs Champions Kevin Rowden and Craig Doughty. They travelled to Bloomfield BC to face Ross Turnbull and Mike Sawyers. After a good start from the Bloomfield pair Kevin and Craig fought back late on to win 21-12.
11th June 2007
There were four remaining Bath BC Triples in action on Monday. Romney Cox, Kevin Rowden and Craig Doughty played A Taylor, D Skehan and H Lorimer (Norwest BC) and in a close match came through to win 16-9 and progress to Round 4 where they will meet Weston Bath BC triple of A Biggs, P Provis and A Tarrant.
Don Turner, John Freeman and Duncan McGovern entertained the Triple from Sydney Gardens of T Winsborough, Shoemark and M Jones in their 3 round tie. After a good start from the Sydney Garden trio they took an early lead, however some consistent bowling from Bath ensured they won the game 19-13. They will now face another Bath triple of George Lee, Derrick Southcombe and Tony Shearing who travelled to Weston Bath BC to face J&C Feltham and McGrath. Another close game for the Bath triple followed, with them eventually pulling through 20-16.
The final triple in action of John Hazard, Martin Walmsley and Mike Rixson played Gullick, D Dart and Pidgeon from Purnells BC who had already disposed of a Bath triple in the previous round. It was a tough night for our Bath team and unfortunately they couldn’t pull back in the game late on, final score finishing 19-13 to the Purnell side.

Somerset CBA 104 v 94 Wiltshire CBA
Venue: Bath Bowling Club
Three members of Bath Bowling Club were in action for Somerset’s 2nd game in this year’s national championship. Terry Perkins and Craig Doughty, with an unchanged rink from the Devon game (with Ed Hopegood and Neil Yeoman (Bristol)) produced some excellent bowling to come out comfortable rink winners against Dave Snell’s Wiltshire four.
Mike Parsons was added to the team at lead in place of James Branfield who was unavailable for this fixture. The rink including Andrew Sully (Williton) making his debut, Neil Kunc (Bridgewater BCL) and Don Fowkes (Watchett), contested a tight game and found themselves several shots down at half way. However some excellent conversion shots by skip Don Fowkes ensured Somerset pulled back to just 1 shot down playing the 21st end. A single on the last for Somerset made the score 20-20 and ensured a point.
Further excellent performances from rinks skipped by Ryan Collier (Bristol) who beat Russell Francis and Neil Williams (Watchett) beating England International Graham Shadwell ensured Somerset came away with a 19-3 victory and still keeps them within a chance of qualifying for the finals.
5th June 2007
Monday night saw the second round of the Somerset County Triples take place. A total of 6 teams were in action from Bath BC, all looking to progress through towards the area finals.
The team of R Cox, K Rowden and C Doughty entertained the Weston Bath side of Underwood, Gill and R Stokes. After a close game C Doughty and co pulled away with a few ends remaining to chalk up a 20-12 victory and move through to Round 3 where they face either A Taylor, D Skehan and H Lorimer or Bath BC’s A Gilbert, K Newman and G Hall (update to follow).
D Turner, M Parsons and D McGovern played Young, Priddle and Challenger from Purnells BC who had already 1 scalp against Bath BC opponents when they beat R Doughty’s triple 13-11 in the first round. There was not to be a repeat of this however, as the Bath triple managed to take an early advantage with a 7-0 lead after 7 ends. D McGovern’s rink moved on to win 25-5 in what was a much closer game than the score line suggests.
There was another victory for Bath’s G Lee, D Southcombe and T Shearing who entertained Keynsham’s triple of Evans, Austin and Murray, in what was a very close encounter. With Bath 1 down playing the last end, 2 excellent woods from Bath skip T Shearing ensured that they picked up a sizeable count and win through to round 3. The final score, 17-14, they now travel to Weston Bath BC to face J, C Feltham and McGrath.
After a very good win in the first round at Weston Bath BC, J Hazard, M Walmsley and M Rixson played Alexandra Park’s J Williams, G & L Gunstone at Bath BC. In what was again a very close game; Bath took a 3 shot lead into the final end and managed to progress through to round 3 where they will play Gullick, Dart and Pidgeon of Purnells, who beat the final Bath BC triple in action Monday of Melling, Hardwick and Esnouf. The Bath team fought hard to stay in the match early on, but were 10 shots back with 2 ends remaining; they managed to pick up a 6 on the second last end, however, unfortunately could not quite make up the remaining shots, going down 21-17.
3rd June 2007
Devon CBA 113 v 101 Somerset CBA
Venue: Exonia Bowling Club (Devon)
There were 3 Bath BC players involved in Somerset's first Middleton Cup game of the season with a very tough game against Devon at Exonia. Craig Doughty, Terry Perkins and Duncan McGovern were picked to represent the county and had mixed fortunes on the green. Terry Perkins skipped a rink which included Ed Hopegood, Neil Yeoman (both Bristol BC) and Craig Doughty and finished up with a very good victory, beating Devon skip and England trialist Lee Hayward.
Duncan McGovern played 2 to skip Don Fowkes (Watchett BC) with James Branfield (Clevedon) at lead and Neil Kunc (Bridgewater BC) at 3. They all performed very well and were desperately unlucky not to get a much better result on the day.
Overall Somerset performed very well with some outstanding performances across the green. Good wins on 3 rinks were not quite enough, the rink skipped by Ryan Collier (Bristol BC) beat England International Ian Bond by 2 and Neil Williams' (Watchett BC) rink also picked up what might be some vital rink points. Somerset will play Wiltshire CBA at BATH BC on the 9th June
